Today, via the Terminal49 dashboard, you can track containers by booking or MBoL number. The Terminal49 API allows tracking by container number. Develop the capability to track by container number in the dashboard as well.

You can now initiate tracking by container number on Terminal49! Try it out: https://app.terminal49.com/track 
If you don't have the booking number or MBL and just have a container number, it is now possible to track it on the Terminal49 dashboard (along with the API) as long as you know the carrier. We can automatically identify the shipping line for MBLs and are working on better auto-identification for carriers on booking numbers and container numbers - stay tuned!

For carriers that support tracking by container number, we will add support for tracking of individual containers via the Terminal49 Dashboard as well as email uploads.

In many cases we have a container number but don't have the shipping line information.

Could have been great if it was possible to create a tracking request just by the container number.

Hi Guy Pinchuk - if you are using the Terminal49 API, this is possible in some cases (a few shipping lines support it, though most don't). It is definitely on our radar to add this capability to the Terminal49 dashboard where possible as well. Thanks!

Namita: Hey Namita, my feature request is different from this one, so I'm not sure the merge is correct.
I want to be able to create tracking requests through the API, by sending a container number without
 a shipping line.
In many cases, we don't have the information about the shipping line, so it could have been great if I could have provided T49 with just a container number, and T49 would try and check if any of the shipping lines that do support tracking by container, have tracking information about the container number I've provided.
Hope this is more clear now - would be happy to provide more context if needed.
